There’s a unique beauty in not knowing how to approach a challenging task or solve a thorny problem. You haven’t been programmed with preconceived notions of constraints, roadmaps, or acceptable solutions. Your canvas is blank, and you’re free to splash it with whatever colors and strokes your intuition deems right.
This is the breeding ground of creativity and innovation.
I’ve noticed that those who’re unfamiliar with ‘set industry practices’ or conventional wisdom often bring the most innovative solutions to the table. They color outside the lines because they don’t even see the lines; they aren’t confined by traditional methods and boundaries.
Think about it, so many groundbreaking innovations have come from people who knew nothing about the status quo. They pushed boundaries because they didn’t know where they were. The Wright brothers built the first power-driven airplane even though they were bicycle mechanics, not aeronautical engineers.
This isn’t an invitation to ignore acquiring knowledge and skills. Rather, it’s an encouragement to embrace the unknown, to be comfortable with apparent insufficiency, and to leverage this as a powerful tool for innovation. It’s a call to stop seeing lack of knowledge as a limitation and start seeing it as an opportunity to create something truly unique.
Embrace the unknown. Innovate. There’s no fun in coloring within the lines anyway.
